Press On: Why Community and Accountability Matter for Thriving

One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned on my health journey is this: thriving isn’t a solo endeavor.
Recently, I challenged my fellow seniors and Prime Timers to join me in a belly fat reduction challenge using exercises from a SilverSneakers workout video. The commitment was simple—complete a minimum of three exercise sessions each week, with the goal of reaching four.
I’m happy to report that I completed my fourth set during the very first week.
Why does that matter?
Because I want you to know that I’m committed to walking the walk, not just talking the talk.
As a health coach, I could easily tell people what they should be doing. But true leadership begins with example. If I’m encouraging others to make healthier choices, I need to be making those same choices myself.
And that’s where you come in.
You Are Part of My Accountability Team
Every time you watch a video, leave a comment, share a post, or subscribe to the channel, you become part of a growing virtual community dedicated to healthier living.
You help keep me accountable.
You remind me why I continue sharing my story and encouraging others to take charge of their health.
Community matters more than many of us realize. Research continues to show that meaningful social connections contribute to better health outcomes and even increased longevity. We weren’t designed to do life alone.
We thrive together.
Prime Timers: Our Best Years Can Still Be Ahead
I often refer to those of us in the second half of life as Prime Timers.
Whether you’re 35, 55, 65, 75, or beyond, I believe your best years don’t have to be behind you. Aging is inevitable, but how we age is influenced by the choices we make each day. I’m living proof that you can thrive after 55… after 65… after 75… and even after 80.
Thriving requires intentionality.
It means investing in our health physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Press On
My morning devotion recently focused on two simple words:
Press on.
There will always be obstacles. Some mornings, you won’t feel like exercising. Some days, healthy eating will require extra effort. Life has a way of disrupting our routines.
That’s when we need what I like to call my friend, “Will Power.”
Will Power is that quiet voice reminding us why our health matters. It’s the inner resolve that helps us make the next right choice, even when motivation is running low.
Thriving isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about continuing to move forward.
My Wake-Up Call
There was a time when I thought everything was fine.
One Friday, nothing seemed wrong.
By the following Friday, I found myself facing the granddaddy of all chronic diseases: cardiovascular disease.
On March 8, 2008, I suffered a heart attack that changed the course of my life. The nurses later told me that my exercise habits likely saved my life.
But I also learned an important truth:
You can’t outrun a bad diet.
That experience forced me to reevaluate everything. I had a choice to make. I could withdraw and accept declining health as inevitable, or I could take ownership of my future.
I chose to thrive.
Making Deposits into Your IRAH
Since that day, I’ve encouraged others to build what I call their IRAH—Individual Retirement Account for Health.
Unlike a financial IRA, this account isn’t funded with dollars. It’s funded through daily choices.
Every nutritious meal.
Every walk around the neighborhood.
Every workout completed.
Every glass of water instead of a sugary drink.
Every hour of quality sleep.
Every positive thought.
Every act of gratitude.
Those small deposits add up over time.
The earlier you start, the greater the return.
But it’s never too late to begin.
Progress Over Perfection
If you’ve been watching from the sidelines, consider this your invitation.
Join the challenge.
Start where you are.
Do what you can.
Celebrate every victory, no matter how small.
Remember, consistency is more important than perfection.
A ten-minute walk is better than no walk.
One healthier meal is better than continuing old habits.
One encouraging comment can make someone else’s day.
Progress compounds.
Let’s Thrive Together
If you’re participating in the challenge, I’d love to hear from you.
How many exercise sessions have you completed this week?
What healthy habit are you working to strengthen?
Share your progress and encourage someone else in the comments.
We don’t do this alone—we thrive together.
As we continue building this community, my hope is that we inspire one another to make deposits into our IRAH every single day.
Let’s keep pressing on.
Let’s live younger, longer.
And let’s thrive—together.
