BELLY FAT ISN’T JUST FAT----IT’S TOXIC

Remove the Waste from Your Waist

Last week, we talked about the dangers of loneliness and why community is one of the most powerful contributors to a longer, healthier life. This week, I’d like to shift gears and talk about something a little more personal—belly fat.

And trust me, I’m not pointing fingers.

I’m talking to myself as much as I’m talking to you.

Like many people over 50, I’ve noticed that stubborn fat around my middle has a way of showing up when my discipline starts slipping. The challenge is that what we often dismiss as a “spare tire” or simply getting older may actually be one of the strongest indicators of our future health.

Not All Fat Is Created Equal

The fat in your cheeks isn’t the same as the fat around your waist.

The fat that accumulates deep inside the abdomen, surrounding vital organs like the liver, pancreas, and intestines, is called visceral fat. Unlike other body fat, visceral fat is metabolically active. It releases inflammatory compounds, affects blood sugar regulation, influences blood pressure, and increases stress on the cardiovascular system.

In simple terms, belly fat isn’t just stored energy.

It’s active tissue that can negatively impact your health every day.

Your Waistline Tells a Story

Many people focus on body weight, but research consistently shows that waist circumference is one of the strongest predictors of future health risks.

A growing waistline is associated with increased risk for:

·      Type 2 diabetes

·      Heart disease

·      High blood pressure

·      Stroke

·      Metabolic syndrome

·      Premature mortality

The tape measure may reveal more about your health than the bathroom scale.

That’s why paying attention to your waistline isn’t vanity.

It’s wisdom.

Toxic Waste Around the Waist

I sometimes refer to excess visceral fat as “toxic waste.”

Why?

Because it surrounds some of the most important organs in your body and contributes to chronic inflammation.

Inflammation is often called the silent driver behind many chronic diseases associated with aging. The more visceral fat we carry, the greater the inflammatory burden our body must manage.

The good news?

Reducing abdominal fat can significantly improve health outcomes.

Even modest reductions in waist size can improve blood pressure, blood sugar control, cholesterol levels, mobility, energy, and overall quality of life.

Live LEAN

So what’s the solution?

I believe it starts with four foundational pillars of health:

Lifestyle Exercise Attitude Nutrition

Together they spell LEAN.

The goal isn’t perfection.

The goal is consistently making healthier choices that create healthier outcomes.

Start with Movement

One of the most powerful tools available to us is movement.

Many people think exercise is simply about burning calories. While it certainly does that, movement accomplishes something far more important.

It activates what I call your Internal Pharmacy.

When you exercise, your body releases powerful compounds that improve mood, reduce inflammation, improve insulin sensitivity, support heart health, strengthen bones, and enhance cognitive function.

No prescription required.

Just movement.

A walk around the block.

A bike ride.

Strength training.

Stretching.

Anything that gets you moving.

Making Deposits into Your Health Account

If you’ve followed my channel for any length of time, you’ve heard me talk about your IRAH—your Individual Retirement Account for Health.

Every healthy choice is a deposit.

Every workout is a deposit.

Every nutritious meal is a deposit.

Every night of quality sleep is a deposit.

And just like a financial retirement account, small consistent deposits compound over time.

The opposite is also true.

Poor choices become withdrawals.

Eventually, those withdrawals catch up with us.

My Own Wake-Up Call

I’ll be honest.

I’ve blamed genetics before.

I’ve told myself that carrying extra weight around my middle was simply my hereditary fat pattern.

Then one day my cardiologist tapped my belly and said something I haven’t forgotten.

“Roger, that’s not hereditary. That’s too many biscuits.”

I laughed.

But I also knew he was right.

Sometimes we need a little honesty mixed with a little humor.

The Bottom Line

Age is inevitable.

Aging poorly isn’t.

Your waistline doesn’t define you, but it can provide valuable insight into your health.

The encouraging news is that it’s one of the most controllable risk factors we face.

Small changes made consistently can produce remarkable results over time.

The goal isn’t to look younger.

The goal is to live younger.

So what is your waistline telling you today?

And more importantly, what are you going to do about it?

Start making deposits into your health account today. Your future self will thank you.
